On Tuesday, Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and wearer of one of the most expensive hideous haircuts on a woman, announced in a letter to the National Institutes of Health that the birth control brain child of Margaret Sanger will no longer be accepting “compensation” for its contributions to fetal tissue research:

In order to completely debunk the disingenuous argument that our opponents have been using – and to reveal the true political purpose of these attacks – our Federation has decided, going forward, that any Planned Parenthood health center that is involved in donating tissue after an abortion for medical research will follow the model already in place at one of our two affiliates currently facilitating donations for fetal tissue research. That affiliate accepts no reimbursement for its reasonable expenses – even though reimbursement is fully permitted under the 1993 law. Going forward, all of our health centers will follow the same policy, even if it means they will not recover reimbursements permitted by the 1993 law.

In one way, this is a pyrrhic victory of sorts for the Center for Medical Progress.  After the light was shone more brightly than it was previously on the profits made from “recouping expenses” when handling and shipping off baby parts donated by the mothers after they had their children killed via their videos, Planned Parenthood was forced to admit the practice.  They admitted it, didn’t exactly defend it, and made specific moves to frame the fight for and against abortion as political and legal rather than moral.  So, they won’t be profiting off of the procedure.  At this point.  What might be the more interesting development, is that Planned Parenthood has gone from six to two facilities out of their over 80 that contribute to fetal research.

However, as with every other time the life vs. death debate gets jump-started – and in this case the Center for Medical Progress exposed some truly horrifying practices that the American public had no clue was going on – it stalls and gets lost in euphemistic language and legality that shields the moral discussion from fruition.  Unfortunately, that is where the debate is treading water at this point, and the pushback from Planned Parenthood is getting some traction for their side.

Tuesday’s announcement from Planned Parenthood smacks as a damage control capitulation rather than a sincere effort at reform and revision of principle.   The fact remains, they weren’t the only facilities doing this sort of work, and the others are still pretty much in the shadows.  No one has adequately defended the practice of killing the unborn, altering the procedure, and then using the surviving intact tissue for research that does not invoke visions of Dr. Joseph Mengele and the Third Reich.

So, the work is here is not done despite the cave in.  The fight for life for the unborn over outright murder ain’t over.  Not by a long shot.
