Donald Trump took a major step towards garnering the Republican nomination for president with his 60% victory in New York. The awarding of over ninety delegates was crucial but just as significant was the crushing blow it dealt to whatever shred of momentum and spin the Cruz campaign might have wanted to attach to a less overwhelming repudiation. Cruz, his tactics and his message were soundly rejected and it was done in a manner which left no room for misguided false ambiguity.
In making his victory speech, Donald Trump hit on a few of his familiar themes such as making America great again by bringing jobs back, addressing the horrible international agreements the American people have been subjected to, rebuilding our military and taking care of our veterans.
He pledges to get rid of Obamacare and common core and recaps the great things that happened during the week. Mr. Trump looks at the results on a television screen and notes, “We don’t have much of a race anymore, Senator Cruz is just about mathematically eliminated, and we’ve won another state.
He notes, “We have won millions of more votes than Senator Cruz, millions and millions of more votes than Governor Kasich, we won now, and especially after tonight, close to three hundred delegates more than Senator Cruz, we’re really, really rockin. We expect we’re going to have an amazing number of weeks because these are places and they’re in trouble, they’re in big trouble.”
He takes a jab at the delegate piracy that Cruz has been engaged in for the last couple of months, saying, “It’s really nice to win the delegates with the votes, you know? It’s really nice.” He says, “Nobody should be given delegates, which is a ticket to victory and it’s not a fair ticket. And even though we’re leading by a lot and we can’t be caught, it’s impossible to catch us, nobody should take delegates and claim victory unless they get those delegates with voters and voting. And that’s what’s going to happen, and you watch; because the people aren’t going to stand for it.”
“It’s a crooked system, it’s a system that’s rigged, says Trump, “and we’re going to go back to the old way, it’s called you vote and you win.” He makes note of a new poll that has come out of California which he describes as “unbelievable,” predicting they will go into the convention a winner, but saying “Nobody can take an election away, with the way they’re doing it in the Republican Party. He notes the raw deal that Bernie Sanders is receiving in the Democrat Party and observes that as bad as they are, the Republicans are worse.
